Important Information

___________________________________________________________________________

When you begin working at Northern Illinois University, you are bombarded with information. We hope to help take some of the stress out of the situation and make things easier for you.

PARKING

Parking on campus is color-coded. Staff & faculty is designated by blue signs, and vehicles have blue parking stickers.
You can find a parking map here.
AFSCME Local 1890 has negotiated lower parking rates for our members. If your position requires you to be on campus, you will need to purchase a parking permit.
Purchase your parking permit here-payments can be a one-time payment, or through payroll deductions.
You will want to get this before your first day so Parking Services has time to send you your permit.
Otherwise, you’ll be parking in the visitors lot for $5/day.

RETIREMENT

NIU employees have access to retirement benefits through the State Universities Retirement System (SURS).
Please note: Since NIU employees don’t pay into Social Security, you won’t be eligible for Social Security coverage based on your employment at NIU.
You will pay Medicare taxes.

You have six months to choose!
If you’re new to SURS, you’ll need to enroll in a plan within six months of your date of hire. If you don’t, you’ll be placed in the Traditional Plan. Your choice is final and cannot be changed.
You can read about the three plan options on the HR website, at the bottom of the page.

INSURANCE

NIU employees have access to comprehensive insurance coverage and other benefits. Some benefits are provided by the state of Illinois, while others are provided by NIU.
Health, Vision, Dental, Life, and Disability insurance are some of the many options you must choose.
You can download the Benefit Choice Booklet from the HR website and read about the health insurance options.
When you want to compare plans and prices for health insurance, or you are just ready to sign up- you go to the CMS website . If this is your first time accessing the CMS website, you must register first.
You are part of the SEGIP- Sate Employees Group Insurance Plan (the purple section).
